Catena Zapata was founded in 1902 by Italian immigrant Nicola Catena. Nicols Catena Zapata, the third-generation vintner, was the driving force who challenged conventional wisdom in the 1980s and 1990s, pioneering high altitude viticulture in the Andean foothills to elevate the quality of Argentine wine.
On the nose, it is highly perfumed, offering layered notes of black fruitslikeblackberries, black cherries, and black plumsalongside savory hints of green olive, tobacco, cigar box, and a stony, saline minerality. There are also subtle touches of vanilla and dark chocolate. This is a full bodied, tremendously complex, and refined wine. The palate unfolds with flavors of black cherry, cassis, red currant, eucalyptus, and black pepper. It is supported by a very fresh, juicy flow and super fine, velvety tannins, giving it a structured, linear, and elegant feel.
Suggested pairings for this richly structured red blend include grilled flat iron steak or a bone in ribeye.
