Domaine Sylvie Esmonins Vieilles Vignes is sourced from old vines planted between the 1940s and 1960s, primarily from the Combe du Dessus and other well-situated plots just below premier cru level in Gevrey-Chambertin. These low-yielding, deeply rooted vines on limestone-rich soils produce small berries of intense concentration and balance.
The 2022 vintage was warm and generous but marked by surprising freshness, giving this wine both depth and clarity. Fermentation was carried out with a significant proportion of whole clusters, enhancing aromatic complexity and tannic backbone. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, around 4050% new, bringing added texture and spice without masking terroir character.
Expect a wine that combines richness and finesse: ripe red and black fruits, violet, graphite, and forest floor, supported by firm but polished tannins. It will evolve beautifully over the next 1015 years. Serve it with roasted game birds, duck confit, or mushroom risotto for a classic pairing.
Domaine Sylvie Esmonin, based in Gevrey-Chambertin, is a small, family-run estate led by Sylvie Esmonin, one of the Cte de Nuits most admired vigneronnes. Since taking over from her father Michel in the late 1990s, she has steadily built a reputation for making expressive, site-driven wines that capture the essence of her home village.
Her approach blends traditional Burgundian techniquesnotably whole-cluster fermentationwith meticulous vineyard work and careful levage. Farming is sustainable, with a focus on soil vitality and vine health. In the cellar, Sylvie avoids manipulation, allowing native yeasts, thoughtful oak use, and slow maturation to shape the wines naturally.
The Vieilles Vignes bottling is a cornerstone of the domaine, offering a clear window into the depth and soul of old-vine Gevrey. Structured yet refined, it is a standout example of village-level Burgundy with premier cru presence.
