A blend of 50% Clairette and 50% Roussanne, fermented in stainless steel with native yeasts and has malolactic fermentation blocked, the 2013 Vieux Donjon displays the nervier side of Chteauneuf du Pape Blanc.
The domain was founded by the father of Lucien Michel, Marcel Michel, who did the first bottling at his domain in 1966. Since 1979 Marie Jos and Lucien Michel have run the property. The next generation, Claire Fabre, has had the responsibility for the winemaking since 2008. She is married to another winegrower Adrien Fabreof Domaine La Floranein Visan.
In 2013 Claire’s brother Franois joined her at the domain, and the two of them became officially responsible for the property together with their mother Marie Michel.
The domain covers 15 ha of Chateauneuf du Pape, one of them with white varieties.
The vinification process is in the best sense of the word traditional. Only one cuve of red and of white Chateauneuf du Pape is made. The grapes for the reds have for a great part since 1991 been destemmed.
